BJP is behind violence in Uttara Kannada district: Dinesh Gundu Rao

Bengaluru: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) working president Dinesh Gundu Rao on Tuesday, blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its affiliated outfits for the violent demonstrations in the Uttara Kannada district.

“The activists of BJP, RSS and Bajarang Dal are inciting innocent youths to participate in violent demonstrations. Their agenda is to ruin peace and create law and order problems in the state. The BJP is using the death of Paresh Meshta for political gain,” Dinesh Gundu Rao said.

Blaming the BJP leaders for spreading rumours about the death of Paresh Mestha without waiting for the police report, Rao alleged that the BJP leaders have become jealous of the development in the state under the leadership of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

“Karnataka is in the first place among the states as far as attracting investment to start industries. The BJP leaders’ agenda is to bring bad name to the Congress government in the state by creating law and order problems. They want to create fear among the investors,’’ Rao said.

Coming down heavily on the BJP leaders for making false allegations against the Congress government, the KPCC working president said that the BJP national president Amit Shah and Mysuru MP Pratap Simha wanted the BJP cadre to indulge in violence in the state and divert the attention of the people from the development and welfare schemes introduced by the Congress government.

“I condemn the violence in the Uttara Kannada district. I want the police to take stringent action against those indulging in violence, including pelting stones at KSRTC buses and residence of MLA,’’ he said.

Ridiculing BJP leader K S Eshwarappa, who allegedly advised the BJP activists to tell lies, the KPCC working president said the BJP leaders are experts in spreading rumours and making false allegations.

FRDI Bill

Demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to withdraw the Financial Resolution and Deposit Insurance (FRDI) Bill 2017, the KPCC working president said it would affect the common man who has already suffered due to the demonetization of high value currency notes and the implementation of Goods and Service Tax (GST).

“I will convene a meeting of the Congress MPs from Karnataka to advise them to oppose the FRDI Bill when its comes up for debate in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. I demand the Prime Minister and the Union Finance Minister to withdraw it immediately,’’ he said.

He added that the financial condition of the public sector banks was far from satisfactory since the non-performing assets (NPAs) have reached Rs 10 lakh crore.

“The NPAs of all public sector banks were 5.9 per cent in 2016-17. Now the NPAs have increased to 9.6 per cent. It is quite an alarming and disturbing trend. I hold the NDA government responsible for this,’’ he said.

According to him, the FRDI Bill empowers the Corporations to bail-in the company. While a bail-out is the use of public funds to inject capital into an ailing company, a bail-in involves the use of depositors’ funds to achieve those ends. This can be done either by cancelling the bank’s liabilities, or converting them into other forms, such as equity.
