BJP legislators on Thursday raised concerns in the Assembly over the worsening garbage clearance situation in Bengaluru, claiming that waste management has been disrupted for the past three days.
Malleswaram MLA CN Ashwathnarayan flagged the issue during the Zero Hour, stating that waste from the city had been halted from being sent to the Mitaganahalli processing units in Kannur Gram Panchayat. Locals from Mitaganahalli and surrounding areas reportedly stopped over 500 trucks from entering the processing units, accusing authorities of improper waste disposal.
Jayanagar MLA CK Ramamurthy later spoke to TNIE, asserting that residents of Mitaganahalli have alleged that waste is being dumped in landfills without proper segregation. This lack of sorting, he claimed, is resulting in the contamination of water sources, including borewells and lakes. Ramamurthy emphasized that the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) must ensure waste segregation before being sent to landfills.
The issue has previously been encountered in other areas like Mandur and Mavallipura, where locals had stopped garbage dumping in landfills due to similar concerns. Ramamurthy called for a permanent resolution to the crisis, criticizing the inability of the government to address it effectively.
He also pointed out that while Deputy CM DK Shivakumar promotes the “Brand Bengaluru” initiative, the city’s garbage issue remains unresolved. Despite the state government’s earlier promise to acquire 100 acres of land at four locations outside the city for waste disposal, no concrete actions have been taken, he added.
