Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah faced sharp criticism from the BJP after a recent incident of sexual violence in Bengaluru. Responding to demands for his Home Minister G Parameshwara’s resignation, Siddaramaiah questioned if such crimes hadn’t occurred under BJP’s rule.
“Crimes like rape are unacceptable. Women’s safety is a priority. But society has its share of bad elements. We will take strict action,” he stated at a ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim’ event in Belagavi, honouring Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. BR Ambedkar. His remarks were condemned as deflective by the opposition.
BJP’s R Ashoka, Leader of the Opposition, accused the Congress government of failing to ensure public safety. “The state’s law and order have hit rock bottom. Girls live in constant fear. If you cannot govern, step down,” he said.
Former Health Minister Dr. CN Ashwath Narayan highlighted the Congress’ shortcomings. “The Bengaluru gang rape case exposes the government’s inability to provide basic security to women,” he posted on X.
The incident involved two laborers, Ganesh and Shravan, who were arrested after a woman alleged sexual assault and extortion. Authorities revealed that a financial dispute arose during a consensual agreement, leading to the assault. Bengaluru Police chief B Dayananda confirmed, “Two suspects have been apprehended, and the case has been filed for extortion and sexual violence.”
The rising crime rate has intensified the political battle, with the BJP questioning Congress’ commitment to safety reforms.
