Bengaluru: When the Bengaluru police have started to crackdown on pubs playing any form of music without possessing the required licenses, a tweet by Bengaluru DCP in response to a man complaining about loud music from a nearby pub has left several dumbfounded.
Taking to Twitter Sultan Singh, an Indiranagar resident, on Sunday complained about the loud music played at a pub in the vicinity while flouting rules laid down by the apex court and sought to know why action has not been initiated against them.
In his tweet, Sultan pointed out a Supreme Court order which dictates that no loud music can be played after 10 pm, and said that complaining about the same to the police helpline did not yield any result.
While he hoped that the police would take note of his complaint and act against those responsible for the noise pollution, a tweet from Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Ajay Hilori left him shocked. Responding to Sultan’s tweet, Hilori said, “I would like to invite you to my office. Plz come and show me that order. I would really like to go through that order line by line, word by word, ‘along with you’.”
The tweet, obviously not only angered Bengaluru residents but also raised questions if the cops should be tutored on how to reply to complainants. Some netizens even accused the top cop of “intimidation” while some asked the DCP to set a date and time so that they too could show him the SC order and KSPCB rules.
As part of the ongoing crackdown of pubs and other such establishments, the police have given them appropriate notice period to comply with the requirements. Commissioner of Police T Suneel Kumar has said that for now, an order has been issued to those pubs in violation of the notice to cease playing music.
In January this year, the Supreme Court upheld a 2005 law that required a special license by the Commissioner of Police to play music for public entertainment.
