Bengaluru: Namma Bengaluru has got the 2nd place among 11 cities which are facing a scarcity of water in the world, says a report by the BBC. According to the sources, the port capital of South Africa Cape Town will not get drinking water within a short span of time.
According to the report, Bengaluru witnessed a sharp growth in a short span of time, because of information technology due to which providing drinking water to the city is a challenge and even maintaining the drainage system is a headache, said the report.
Both China and India are facing the problem of water pollution. Around 85% lake water of Bengaluru can be used only for industries. That can be used for drinking and not even for bathing purpose. The Chinese capital of Beijing is next to Bengaluru on the list.
Statistics say that 19 TMC Cauvery water is being supplied to the 7 lakh houses of Bengaluru, every year. There are around 20 lakh houses in the city. So, every day, 75 crore liter water is being pumped by the bore wells. Meanwhile, 42% of Cauvery water is being leaked during the process. “If we fail to find a solution for the water scarcity problem, we may have to shift around 50% of residence somewhere else in the coming 10 years,” warns a senior government official.
Overall, among the cities facing a dearth of water, Cape Town is in the first place, and Sao Paulo of Brazil is in the third place. The city which has more than 2 crore population contains water only for next 20 days. Now, police protection is being given to water tanks as they might get robbed by the people.
