B’luru police assault woman, officer suspended

Bengaluru: In a shocking incident, a woman was physically assaulted by two police officers on January 19.

The incident which occurred outside the Kumaraswamy Layout Police Station in Bengaluru, has been captured on camera by a person in the station. In the video, ASI Renukaiah is seen hitting a woman and forcibly pushing her out of the police station. He is also seen manhandling the woman outside the police station in spite of her asking him not to lay hands on her. Another police officer is seen grabbing and pushing the woman away at the start of the video. The video has been shared widely and has sparked debate on the abuse of power by the police official.

The victim of the assault, Saraswati, had approached the police to resolve a family dispute involving her daughter Rakeshwari.

Bengaluru South DCP Annamalai K who conducted an enquiry into the incident suspended ASI Renukaiah with immediate effect. The fate of the other officer has not yet been disclosed.
