Bengaluru: Intracity bus travel in Bengaluru is changing- the ticketing system has gone digital owing to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) confirmed the same citing the shift in its ticketing system to “provide safe and convenient transport facility, to control the spread of coronavirus and to create a sense of trust for passengers using public transport.”

The BMTC has introduced a digital ticketing system in 5,300 busses of its large fleet. As of now 750 to 800 passengers are using the system. according to the BMTC authorities, the payment can be done digitally for daily pass and tickets by using the QR code facility provided with all the conductors in the buses.

“Around Rs.50,000 is collected through digital payments. Most of the payments are happening on the electronic city route,” informed a BMTC officer.

It can be recalled that soon after the BMTC busses resumed operations post lockdown, a section of passengers was urging the corporation to introduce digital ticketing to prevent the spread of the Corona.

Initially, it was tried in 200 Buses. The ticketing machine, Ingenico, can also validate bus passes, including student passes. We have already trained our conductors and are confident of its success,” a senior BMTC official said.
