The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is set to retire its iconic Volvo buses serving the Kempegowda International Airport and replace them with 320 new AC electric buses. This transition, planned for next month, aligns with BMTC’s efforts to curb operational losses while promoting eco-friendly public transport.

The Volvo buses, long associated with comfort and reliability, have become financially unviable due to high maintenance and running costs. In contrast, the electric buses, supplied by Ashok Leyland, are expected to significantly lower operational expenses and contribute to reducing Bengaluru’s carbon footprint.

This initiative is part of BMTC’s broader strategy to modernize its fleet under national schemes like FAME II, aiming to deploy 1,751 electric buses citywide. The introduction of electric buses on airport routes is a step toward creating a sustainable and efficient transport network.

In addition to being cost-effective, these buses will help reduce pollution and make public transport a more attractive option for daily commuters and travelers alike. BMTC’s plans also include establishing charging stations across major hubs to support this green fleet.
