In a bizarre yet eye-opening incident, a Bengaluru-based tech enthusiast stirred a social media frenzy after he used artificial intelligence to create a fake dating profile—and the results were mind-blowing.
The user, who goes by the handle @infinoz on X (formerly Twitter), shared his story of experimenting with OpenAI’s new GPT-4o image generation tool. Out of sheer boredom, he generated hyper-realistic images of a fictional woman and decided to upload one as a profile picture on Bumble, a popular dating app.
“What started as innocent fun turned wild fast,” he wrote. Within just two hours, the fake AI-generated profile received over 2,750 likes, numerous SuperSwipes, and was flooded with romantic messages, compliments, and even offers of ice creams and concert tickets.
“My phone was buzzing non-stop,” he added, revealing how the AI-generated persona had captivated hundreds of real users on the platform, none of whom suspected the profile wasn’t real.
The experiment highlights both the power and potential ethical concerns of advanced generative AI tools in today’s digital world. While it amused many online, it also sparked discussions around consent, deception, and the future of trust in virtual interactions.
As dating apps become more image-driven and AI continues to evolve, the line between reality and digital fabrication is becoming increasingly blurred.
