Broken roads, broken routines: Bengaluru kids brave chaos to reach school
As schools prepare to reopen this week, parents across Bengaluru are voicing serious concerns about the crumbling roads, turning daily school commutes into unsafe and exhausting journeys.
Last week, Sri Kumaran Children’s Home in Mallasandra issued a note to parents, highlighting the pothole-ridden, muddy roads leading to the school. The letter urged parents to directly petition civic bodies, as the school itself has no control over the pace of road repairs. MP Tejasvi Surya also shared a video showing the poor road conditions, criticising government inaction.
In Narayanaghatta, Sarjapur Hobli, Rama Krishna is rallying parents to confront local officials. His daughter’s six-kilometre school route is plagued by deep potholes, especially at Muthanallur Cross and Kodathi Junction. “It now takes 30–40 minutes, compared to 10 before the rains,” he said, blaming stagnant water and heavy vehicles for worsening the damage.
In Hennur, school buses that should arrive by 7:30 am often only reach by 9:30. “Kids come home at 6 pm, too drained to study or play,” said Ashwin S K. Schools affected in the area include Vidyashilp, VIBGYOR, and Euro Kids.
Similar complaints are surfacing in HBR Layout, Kanakapura, and Koramangala 3rd Block, where waterlogging from incomplete drainage work is alarming parents of students from multiple local schools.
