Bengaluru: Karnataka government has announced a tax hike on liquor in the state, on Wednesday, in a bid to generate additional revenue.
The liquor shops that were closed in the state for about 45 days were opened on Monday after the lockdown guidelines were relaxed.
Now, the state government led by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has said that the excise duty on liquor will be hiked by 17 percent.
The special 11 per cent ‘COVID19 fees’ comes in addition to 6 per cent hike on excise that the state government had announced in its budget for 2020-2021 taking the total hike in taxes to 17 per cent, said sources.
The announcement on hike was made the CM while announcing an economic relief package to farmers, weavers, construction workers, MSMEs and workers from the unorganised sector.
In all Rs 197 crore worth liquor was sold in the state on Tuesday.
