Bengaluru: In a rather historic turn of events, BS Yeddyurappa tendered his resignation to the post of the Chief Minister way before taking the floor test.

On May 15, the BJP emerged as the single largest party in the assembly with 104 votes and it required 13 votes to prove its majority. While the Governor gave the BJP 15 days time to prove their majority, the Supreme Court directed the BJP to prove its majority on Saturday, May 19 by 4 pm.

On these lines, though the BJP arrived at the Vidhan Soudha, it refused to go for the floor test.

The incident that took place in the power corridors of Karnataka reminded many of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajapayee, who too had to take the floor test in the Parliament in 1999. The incident had gone down the pages of history as the most infamous no-confidence motion ever.

Vajapayee too had delivered a fierce speech before tendering his resignation and walking out of the Parliament without facing the floor test. Vajapayee needed the support of just one MP to prove a majority, but he refused to go that way. Political pundits say that this episode would never reiterate in the history of India ever again.

However, the episode that unfurled in Bengaluru on Saturday seemed to be a replay of the same. In an emotionally charged speech, BS Yeddyurappa declared his resignation to the post of the CM after being bogged down by the anti-democratic activities of the Congress and the JD(S).

He however said that he would continue his pro-people struggle and now focus on winning all the 28 seats for the upcoming Parliamentary polls, which he deemed as repayment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Yeddyurappa, who was evidently fighting back his tears, said it is true that he spoke to a few MLAs about supporting the BJP, but he did not resort to locking them up in resorts as done by the Congress and the JD(S).

After a long speech, BSY and the BJP legislators and leaders darted out of the Vidhana Soudha to meet the Governor.
