Bangaluru: Last week, the student community was outraged by the Bangalore University’s notice asking gold medalists to shell out Rs 500 for their gold medals and the accompanying certificates while submitting their applications to receive the same.
The backlash following the announcement was enough to push the university on its heels and force it revisit its seemingly ill-conceived decision as, after a special syndicate meeting, the University Registrar of Evaluation and Professor C Shivaraju, announced that the Bangalore University had rescinded its decision to collect Rs 500 from the gold medalists.
The special syndicate meeting was held on January 10, where the controversial notice featured on the discussion agenda.
According to Shivaraju, the medals and certificates will be paid for from the university funds in accordance with the University Act. The special syndicate also discussed alternative ways to boost the endowment fund.
The notice issued by the university last week had asked that the gold medalists to make the payment of Rs 500 in the form of a demand draft (DD), in favour of the Finance Officer of the Bangalore University. A list of gold medalists was sent to the colleges concerned who were asked to collect the money from the scholars listed.
Many students found this insulting and cheap prompting many to consider forgoing of the medals.
