Bengaluru: Responding to the backlash to the proposed Yesu Krista statue in Kanakapura, Congress leader D K Shivakumar said, on Monday, January 13, that the decision to construct the structure was that of the villagers.
“It is the decision of the Christian community of the village to build the statue. As I am the MLA of the constituency, I have to help. The land was given for the construction, everything is legal. Since I have been their legislator for the past 30 years, I have to support them,” he explained.
Speaking about the RSS and BJP leaders’ opposition to the construction of the 114-foot tall statue of Jesus Christ and the “Kanakapura Chalo” rally, he said, “They (the people of Kanakapura) are simple, we have to support them. Let hundreds of RSS and BJP leaders come, shout and go; we are least bothered.”
It can be recalled that the foundation stone for the Yesu Krista statue was laid by the MLA on December 25, 2019 in Harbele village of the Ramanagara district. He had got 10 acres of land sanctioned by the government for the project.
A trust, assigned with the task of constructing the statue, has already received the title deeds and other relevant documents. The statue will be made entirely of hard granite.
