Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) plans to set up Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) near five lakes in the city.

The plants are being set up to ensure that sewage water doesn’t flow into Agara, Sarakki, Chikka Begur, K.R. Puram and Hulimavu lakes, and are expected to start functioning over the next 24 months.

A total of 75 MLD of sewage water is expected to be treated in these STPs.

Nityananda Kumar, Additional Chief Engineer Maintenance Zone 3, BWSSB confirmed that construction of these plants is in progress.

While the Chikka Begur STP is likely to be completed by the end of this year, followed by the one at Hulimavu, the rest will be completed by the end of 2019, officials said.

The plant at Agara lake will have a capacity of 35 MLD, the ones at Sarakki and Chikka Begur will each process 5 MLD, the one at K.R. Puram 20 MLD and at Hulimavu 10 MLD.
