Cash seizures across country: 20 per cent from Karnataka

Bengaluru: Of the Rs 3,000-cr cash seized from across the country after demonetisation, 20 per cent is from Karnataka. The Garden City stands first among the districts where illegal cash was uncovered.

Income Tax sleuths have seized Rs 37.58 crore cash in addition to 7.2 kg gold biscuits and 9 kg gold ornaments in various raids conducted across the State. Ten districts namely Koppal, Gadag, Tumakuru, Mandya, Chikkaballapura Kolar, Shivamogga, Haveri, Bagalkote and Ramnagara have remained clean so far.

The highest amount seized by the I-T officials is from Chitradurga, where Veerendra from Challakere had stacked Rs 5.7 crore new currency notes in a secret vault in a bathroom. The officials also seized 32 kg gold. Rs 80 lakh was seized from four places after I-T raids. This was followed by Rs 1.29 crore from Dharwad.

Other seizures included Rs 9.8 lakh from Davangere, Rs 21,000 from Raichur, Rs 8 lakh old currency notes from Bidar, 25 lakh new currency notes from Kalaburagi, Rs 16 lakh from Vijayapura, Rs 72.78 lakh from Uttar Kannada, Rs 46 lakh from Chikkamagaluru, Rs 35.46 lakh from Kodagu and Rs 10 lakh from Chamarajanagar. From Mysuru two people were arrested and the officials seized about Rs 22.26 lakh. Meanwhile, Rs 41.13 lakh was seized in raids conducted in three places of Belagavi.

While police in Udupi seized Rs 71 lakh of Rs 2,000 currency from three persons at Bailoor in Karkala Taluk, three persons were arrested by Puttur police and also seized Rs 18.8 lakh in cash including 168 notes in 2000 denomination.
