Cauvery row: Bengaluru calm after violent protests, police warn against rumours

Bengaluru: A day after violent protests erupted on the streets of Bengaluru, police have imposed Section 144 in several parts of the city. Bengaluru City Commissioner N S Megharik however said that no violent incidents were reported since 10.30pm on Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi too reacted to the protests and urged both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to ‘display sensitivity’.
The police have also warned people against rumours through series of tweets. “Please do not blindly believe in messages circulating on WhatsApp,” said one tweet. “Bengaluru situation is totally calm, strict action will be taken against vandals/miscreants,” said another.

A person died in Rajgopal nagar area after the police opened fire on protesters on Monday night. Miscreants also torched several buses and trucks in Bengaluru and on a highway to Mysuru. Several protesters vandalised public property, including shops.

On Tuesday, the streets are mostly deserted because of the Eid Holiday. Even schools, colleges and offices are shut. Over 15,000 policemen were posted by the state government to maintain law and order. Riot police and paramilitory forces are also out on streets.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has called a meeting of his cabinet to discuss the situation. The court had on Monday modified an earlier order and said Karnataka has to release less water to Tamil Nadu, but for five more days. Karnataka, which will end up giving more water, urged a review but the court refused. Trouble resurfaced in the decades-old dispute over the Cauvery river, which flows through Karnataka into Tamil Nadu, after the Supreme Court last week asked Karnataka to release 15,000 cusecs of water to its neighbour.
