Central team in Karnataka today to assess drought situation

Bengaluru: A team of officials from the Central government will undertake a three-day tour of the State to assess the drought condition in various parts of Karnataka from Wednesday, November 2. The team will submit its report to the Union government.

The team from the Centre has been divided into three groups. While the first group will visit Chitradurga, Ballari, Koppal, Gadag, Dharwad, Haveri and Davangere districts, the second group will tour Ramanagara, Chamarajanagar, Mysuru, Mandya and Hassan districts. The third group will tour Tumakuru, Chikkaballapur, Kolar and Bengaluru Rural districts.

A memorandum was submitted to the Union government by the State government seeking Rs 3,375 crore to take up drought relief works. The state government stated in the memorandum that a prolonged continuous dry spell in the drought-hit taluks has destroyed crops in an area of 25.57 lakh hectares and the loss is estimated to be Rs 11,051.33 crore.

As many as 110 taluks have been declared as drought-hit and another 29 will be added to the drought-hit list soon. The State government has also sought a financial assistance of Rs 120.13 crore to help farmers who have not sown paddy in the Cauvery command area districts.
