Bengaluru: The central government has promised to start a Garment University in Bengaluru, keeping in mind the large number of garment workers in the garden city. Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers and Parliamentary Affairs, Ananth Kumar has said that university will train the workers and hone upon their skills.
He was addressing the gathering in a programme organized by the BJP Mahila Morcha at Bommanahalli Assembly Constituency on Sunday. “We have a plan to establish Garment University in Bommanahalli constituency limits. I have already discussed the matter with the Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani and she has agreed to the proposal,” Ananth Kumar said.
Over 40,000 people are working in garment sector in Bengaluru alone and most of them are women. There is a need to train them on international quality textile making and the Garment University would play a major role here, he said lauding Smriti Irani, who as an HRD Minister had immediately sanctioned IIT to the state and has now agreed for the Garment University.
