Chickpet Residents Demand Action Against Illegal Constructions

Frustrated by rampant illegal constructions in VV Puram and Chickpet, residents have taken matters into their own hands, alleging negligence by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials. The Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) of VV Puram Sub-Division, Krishna Kumar, has come under fire for failing to address public complaints, reportedly investigating only two out of eight reported violations.

The inaction prompted the VV Puram Resident Welfare Association (RWA) to warn of legal action against the BBMP Chief Commissioner for contempt of court. In response, Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath directed the Zonal Commissioner to take strict action against Krishna Kumar, including suspension, if the violations are not addressed within two weeks.

Srikar, Joint Secretary of the RWA, highlighted repeated complaints to the area MLA, Executive Engineer, and Assistant Engineer, none of whom acted decisively. “The AEE has shown no urgency in issuing notices or stopping these violations. This selective reporting raises questions about his motives,” Srikar said.

Adding to the outrage, a resident, Anthony Das Kala, pointed out an illegal nine-floor building allegedly owned by BJP leader Suresh Babu. Despite being flagged, officials allowed the construction to proceed, citing delayed court intervention as a reason. Kala criticized BBMP officials for failing to act promptly, urging the Chief Commissioner to suspend them for dereliction of duty.

Residents demand accountability and are considering legal recourse to address the BBMP’s inaction. They also call for interventions by the Lokayukta or High Court to ensure compliance with the law.
