Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday inaugurated a programme that aims to build and distribute one lakh houses for the poor and homeless in the city, each year.

“We will build buildings on 1,200 acres of government land and distribute it to the poor. The family should not own a house in the city; should have lived here for at least five years, and their annual income must be less than Rs. 87,000 to be eligible for allotment of houses under the scheme,” the chief minister said.

The government will spend Rs. 5.5 lakh to Rs. 6 lakh to build each of these houses. Applications can be filed at Bangalore One centres.

While SC/ST persons will receive a subsidy of Rs 3.5lakh per beneficiary, general category beneficiaries will get a subsidy of Rs 2.7 lakh for each house allotted. The allotment will be done through lottery for 75,000 homes. The remaining 25,000 homes to be kept in reserve for more deserving beneficiaries.
