Bengaluru: In order to rehabilitate school dropouts and former convicts back into society, the Bengaluru City Police have launched the “Bharawase” programme.
The police learnt, through surveys and studies, that the major reasons for crimes such as muggings, thefts and robberies were lack of employment and proper education.
Moreover, when asked, convicts have attributed their involvement in criminal activities to unemployment, unstable jobs and influence from others with criminal backgrounds in their areas.
Speaking about his brainchild the “Bharawase” programme, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Ravi D Channannavar said that it was designed in coordination with the NGO, Amruthabindu. He informed that at present, there were three batches with 50 students each from all age groups. “The aim of the programme is to ensure that they give up their criminal ways and learn how to read and write in Kannada or English,” he said, adding that the students were being trained in carpentry, plumbing, drawing and more.
“This will keep them busy, prevent their minds from getting diverted and getting influenced by anti-social elements,” he said and added that to help people such as these students lead a normal life, the programme should be implemented across the city.
