Bengaluru: A civil engineer’s moment of panic behind the wheel caused a road mishap in Nagarabhavi on Friday night, injuring two pedestrians and damaging six parked two-wheelers near Dr Ambedkar College.

The incident occurred around 9:15pm, when Puneeth, a resident of Andrahalli on Magadi Road, lost control of his Honda City. According to Jnanabharathi traffic police, the vehicle veered off the road, hitting two pedestrians before crashing into the row of parked two-wheelers.

Raj Dev (31), a granite-laying labourer from Kengeri, sustained a fracture in his left leg and is currently under treatment. The second pedestrian suffered minor injuries and was discharged after receiving first aid.

An alcometer test ruled out alcohol consumption, police said. In his initial statement, Puneeth claimed that a group of pedestrians suddenly crossed the road, and in an attempt to avoid them, he panicked and mistakenly hit the accelerator instead of the brake.

Despite vehicle owners expressing willingness to settle damages privately after Puneeth offered to pay for repairs, police proceeded to register a suo-motu case due to the serious nature of injuries.

“A formal case was necessary given the fracture suffered by one of the victims,” a senior traffic police officer said. Investigations are ongoing.
