CJI Chandrachud Emphasises Patience and Compassion at NLSIU Convocation

Chandrachud

Bengaluru: At the 32nd annual convocation of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Chief Justice of India Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud underscored the importance of patience, humility, and compassion as essential virtues for a successful legal career. His 20-minute address resonated with graduates, offering insights drawn from his extensive experience in the legal field.

Transformational Journey

Commencing his speech, CJI Chandrachud reflected on the significance of law convocations, describing them as a moment to acknowledge both the past and the transformation undergone by students during their time at university. He remarked, “One enters the campus with several questions, heavily influenced by their social circle, and perhaps carrying a little baggage, but while leaving, the individual will be a transformed person.”

He highlighted how students are enriched by the diversity of experiences at the college, engaging with differing viewpoints and learning the value of teamwork under pressure.

The Value of Patience

Emphasising the critical nature of patience, the Chief Justice discussed how the urgency for immediate results in today’s fast-paced world can lead to unsustainable solutions for complex societal issues. “The urge to act with immediacy is unsustainable in the long run,” he stated. He encouraged students to ensure that changes in institutions within a stable democracy occur incrementally, warning against the pitfalls of hasty decisions which can negatively impact mental health.

CJI Chandrachud illustrated his point with a personal anecdote regarding a review petition in a death penalty case, where patience played a pivotal role. “I once asked a lawyer, ‘How long will you take?’ He replied, ‘If you have the patience, I will persuade you.’ We gave that little bit of patience that afternoon, resulting in the acquittal of the accused,” he recounted, highlighting the profound impact of a patient approach.

Trusting Instincts and Embracing Compassion

Addressing the graduates, the CJI urged them to trust their instincts while making decisions. “Remember to pause and listen to your instincts. They are reflections of training and experiences,” he advised. He encouraged them not to underestimate their unique perspectives as they embark on their legal careers, urging them to take pride in their individuality.

Additionally, he advocated for the importance of compassion in the legal profession, stating, “Be a compassionate human. Why do we address the first person in courts? We become the voice of the client.” This call to empathy resonated strongly, reinforcing the idea that legal professionals must remain attuned to the human elements of their work.

Conclusion

CJI Chandrachud’s address at NLSIU served as a poignant reminder of the responsibilities that come with a legal career. His emphasis on patience, humility, and compassion encapsulates the virtues necessary not just for legal success, but for fostering a more just and empathetic society. As the graduates prepare to enter the legal arena, they carry with them not only knowledge but also the profound insights shared by one of India’s highest judicial authorities.
