Bengaluru: The Chief Minister’s One Lakh Bengaluru Multi-storey Housing Scheme is set to become a reality soon for the benefit of poor in the city.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday hold a meeting with the housing, labour and other department officials to review the progress of the scheme. The Chief Minister has announced this scheme in the State Budget for the benefit of below poverty line (BPL) families in the city.

The Cabinet meeting held on September 29 gave its nod for the implementation of the scheme and a government order (GO) has also been issued on October 10 for the implementation of this scheme.

“The is very important scheme of the government. It is expected to benefit those BPL families living in Bengaluru without own shelter. I have directed the officials to float tenders inviting bidders for the construction of houses under this scheme. The construction of one lakh houses is expected to be completed in 24 months,’’ Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told reporters here.

The chief minister said that around 1,100 acres of land is needed for the construction of houses. “The revenue officials have identified the land at various places in the city. The government has recovered thousands of acres of encroached land. The houses will be constructed on this land,’’ the chief minister said.

Multi-storied (ground plus three) housing complexes will be built on encroachment-evicted lands.”

“The officials have identified 430 acres for this purpose to start with. Those BPL families living in Bengaluru for more than five years are eligible to avail this scheme,’’ he said.

The beneficiaries will have to pay Rs. 1 lakh while beneficiaries from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe have to pay Rs 50,000 as their contribution for owning the house, while the government will bear the remaining cost.

The beneficiaries from other categories are eligible to get Rs 2.70 lakh subsidy and those from SC/STs will get Rs 3.70 lakh subsidy. “The construction of each house is expected to cost Rs 5.50 lakh. Applications will be accepted online from November 15,’’ he said.

The project is estimated to cost Rs. 6,000 crore and will be implemented through Karnataka Housing Board, Karnataka Slum Development Board and Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation.
