Bengaluru: Bangalore University is likely to award an honorary doctorate to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
As per sources, in the Syndicate meeting held on Saturday, most members, including those nominated by the government, had proposed Siddaramaiah’s name for a honorary doctorate and BU authorities are seriously considering it.
Even at the Academic Council meeting, many members had proposed the CM’s name.
However, BU Vice-Chancellor B Thimme Gowda has clarified that nothing in this regard has been finalised and an expert committee would decide on the names as there are hundreds of applications for honorary doctorates.
While some say that the Expert Committee would be set up with Governor and Chancellor of universities Vajubhai Vala heading the same, some say that the Governor himself may constitute a Committee for the same purpose.
If such is the case, Bangalore University will send all the names for honorary doctorates to Raj Bhavan.
Doubts linger
However, there is a discussion that has been kicked off after the possibility of CM receiving an Honorary Doctorate was out.
When N Prabhu Dev was Vice-Chancellor, the university had passed a resolution to not confer honorary doctorates on politicians. But, the Varsity is planning to pass another resolution in the Syndicate to allow honorary doctorates for politicians.
It may be recalled that P M Narendra Modi (Banaras Hindu University) and UP CM Akhilesh Yadav (Technical University UP) had declined Honorary Doctorates.
