Bengaluru, often referred to as the “city of lakes,” has seen its water bodies dwindle due to urbanization, encroachments, and neglect. However, in a powerful display of community determination, the Kasturinagar Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA), in collaboration with NGO Hands On and Canada-based company CGI, has breathed new life into Channasandra Lake – transforming it from a debris-filled wasteland into a flourishing ecosystem.
A Forgotten Lake, A Community’s Resolve The restoration effort began in mid-2023 during a time when Bengaluru was grappling with a groundwater crisis. Abhijit M S, a member of the Kasturinagar RWA, shared with The Indian Express how they discovered, through the Dishank application, that Channasandra Lake had once existed in their area. Unfortunately, all that remained was a landfill, filled with construction debris and garbage. A small group of determined residents decided to take action, and together, they committed to restoring the lost water body.
