Bengaluru: The Cybercrime, Economic offences, and Narcotics (CEN) police of the city registered an FIR against unidentified scammers who withdrew Rs 2.50 lakhs from the bank account of a city resident by blocking his SIM card. The incident happened between June 4 and 6.

In his complaint, a customer of a nationalised bank (name withheld by police) was searching online for details on how to open a locker in a bank and found a number in one of the search results. When he called the number, an unidentified person answered and asked him to reply to an SMS he would receive.

Within five minutes after the call, the customer received an SMS. He provided all the details sought through SMS and in no time, the scammers cloned his SIM card and withdrew money from his bank account. They then blocked his SIM card, leaving the customer clueless about what had happened.

The customer, unsure of why his SIM card was deactivated, came to know what had happened and that money was withdrawn from his account when he went to the bank on Monday.

“The general public should not go by the online search results and should not share confidential information about their SIM cards,” the CEN police informed.
