Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D. K. Shivakumar met with the Congress leadership in Delhi on Tuesday to discuss the tragic June 4 stampede in Bengaluru that claimed 11 lives and injured 56 others.
Present at the meeting were Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leader Rahul Gandhi, General Secretary (Organisation) K. C. Venugopal, and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Surjewala. The high-level gathering was convened to demand a detailed explanation from the state’s top leaders about the avoidable incident.
According to sources, Rahul Gandhi expressed strong dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the situation. He noted that the tragedy could have been prevented had adequate precautions been taken. Rahul further urged the Chief Minister and his deputy to ensure such lapses never recur and to immediately establish accountability within the state administration.
The incident occurred outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where thousands had gathered to celebrate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL victory. A sudden crowd surge led to chaos, resulting in multiple casualties and severe injuries.
The Congress-led state government has faced intense backlash from the opposition BJP and JD(S), both of which have demanded the resignation of the CM and DCM, holding them directly accountable for the mishap.
Rahul’s remarks come amid growing public anger and scrutiny over crowd management and safety lapses at high-profile public events. The party leadership is now under pressure to take corrective steps and restore public trust.
