Former Karnataka DGP BN Garudachar breathed his last at his Bengaluru residence early Friday due to age-related complications. He was 96. His body has been placed at his Krishna Road home near Basavanagudi post office for final respects. Senior officials, including police commissioner B Dayananda, paid tribute.
Garudachar, known for his discipline and efficiency, played a key role in Bengaluru’s traffic management. As DCP (Traffic) in the 1960s, he introduced the city’s first traffic signal at NR Junction to tackle congestion.
Born on February 16, 1929, in Mandya, he earned an MA in Economics before joining the IPS in 1953. Over his illustrious career, he served as SP in multiple districts, held the Bengaluru Police Commissioner post for 4.5 years, and later became DG-IGP for four years. He was also the first administrative member of the Karnataka Administrative Tribunal (KAT).
Garudachar’s legacy continues through his son, Uday B Garudachar, MLA of Chickpet. His contributions to policing and governance remain a benchmark in Karnataka’s law enforcement history.
