Culpable homicide: Man gets three years of jail

Puttur: A court here has convicted a man of culpable homicide on Wednesday and has pronounced three years of imprisonment to him. The Court maintained that it was a culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Suspect who conspired to kill political leaders, journos in custody-1The convict is Fernand Monteiro, who was facing charges of having killed his wife.

While the prosecution had demanded 10 years of rigorous imprisonment, the defence had requested the court to release the convict stating that time spent in custody could be considered as full punishment as Monteiro has been in judicial custody since July 2013 and he has to spend another 7 months in jail to complete the term.

On June, 2013, Monteiro had brought some pork and asked his wife Roseline to cook it for him. When Roseline refused stating that she could do the cooking only after completing her other daily chores, a raged Monteiro had wielded a sickle at her injuring her on the head. When Roseline managed to survive the attack, he poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze. After battling for life for few days Roseline died on June 11, 2013.

Monteiro was arrested on July 11 the same year by Uppinangadi police and a charge sheet was filed subsequently by then circle inspector of rural police station Suresh Kumar.

In the trial held at the sessions court, the judge came to a verdict that Monteiro was responsible for the death of his wife. The court decided that it was a culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
