Custom officials in judicial custody on corruption charges

Bengaluru: Five superintendents of customs were remanded to judicial custody by a special CBI Court on Saturday after they were found taking bribes from clearing house agents through touts to release imported goods at the import section terminals.

Narasimha Swamy S G, N Sundaram, V Vishveshwara Bhat, V Prem Kumar and K R Somasunder were arrested on charges of corruption after the CBI team had conducted a raid at the import section at Kempegowda International Airport on March 16.

The houses and other properties belonging to the accused officers were further searched by the CBI. Sources said that several documents were seized. Rs 7.5 lakh in cash from the house of Vishveshwara Bhat and Rs 27 lakh in the locker was found again on Saturday. Rs 2.5 lakh was found at the residence of Narasimha Swamy.

The 21st CBI Judge (CCH-4) B K Naik remanded the accused officers to judicial custody till April 1. The court also directed the CBI to file objections to the bail applications by March 23.

The CBI team has registered two separate cases under Sections of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act against the accused officers after they were found that they would clear the day’s parcels only after the touts received the bribe on their behalf.
