A cyclist’s allegation that he was asked to pay Rs 25 at a toll plaza in Bengaluru has gone viral on social media, triggering questions over toll rules and access rights.

In a widely shared video, the cyclist is seen arguing with toll staff and saying he had travelled across India on a bicycle but had never faced such a situation before.

The exact location was initially unclear, but the incident was later identified as the Electronics City toll plaza.

Toll operator denies fee collection

An official from Bangalore Elevated Tollway Ltd clarified that the cyclist had entered the Silk Board–Electronics City elevated corridor on Hosur Road elevated corridor on April 18.

The company stated that bicycles and other non-motorised vehicles are prohibited from using the high-speed stretch for safety reasons.

Officials said warning signboards are placed at entry points to inform commuters of the restrictions.

Staff only cautioned cyclist

According to the operator, when the cyclist reached the toll plaza, staff members stopped and cautioned him for violating access rules.

The company strongly denied collecting any toll amount from him.

Officials clarified that toll charges apply only to authorised motorised vehicles such as two-wheelers, cars and other permitted categories using the corridor.

Social media reaction

Several users online tagged Nitin Gadkari, questioning highway authorities and demanding clarity.

The incident sparked wider debate over signage, enforcement, cyclist safety and the need for dedicated non-motorised transport infrastructure in urban India.

Need for safer cycling routes

The episode has renewed calls for safer and clearer cycling routes in Bengaluru, where many commuters continue to use bicycles for work, fitness and eco-friendly travel.
