Mangaluru: Cyclone ‘Kyarr’, the first cyclone of the post-monsoon season is all set to hit Karnataka coast within the next 48 hours. Thick clouding, rains, thunderstorms and strong winds will be seen during the next 48 hours, after which the threat will start reducing. The system is currently like a depression over the east-central Arabian sea and the same will be named ‘Kyarr’ once it intensifies into a cyclonic storm.

As of now, Kyarr will have no impact on the Indian mainland, while the influence of the same will be felt all along the west coast of Karnataka starting from Mangaluru to Karwar as well as the Konkan and Goa. The intensity of rainfall is likely to increase with the possibility of extremely heavy rains over these regions on Friday.

The IMD has issued an orange alert for districts along the west coast in Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka for Thursday and the warning level has been stepped up to a ‘red’ level for Friday as the chances of extremely heavy rains prevail. The rainfall intensity is likely to drop after Saturday as the storm steers away towards the Arabian coast.

The IMD has warned fishermen against venturing into the sea for fishing. Weather.com reports that naming the next cyclone in the north Indian ocean as Kyarr was a suggestion by Myanmar. The naming follows the guidelines set by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), which stipulates that the names for a cyclone in any ocean basin must be suggested by the countries in the region. For the north Indian Ocean, eight countries suggest the names, including India. While the Maldives named the previous cyclone ‘Hikaa’, India named the cyclone that formed over the Arabian Sea in June this year, as ‘Vayu’.
