Bengaluru: It has recorded approximately 10,468 dengue cases this year, the highest in the last three years, according to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) data. Despite expectations for a decline in cases with the onset of winter, the city has consistently reported over 1,000 cases since July. Experts suggest that changes in weather patterns, including intermittent rains in November and delayed winter conditions, may have contributed to the sustained high number of cases.
While BBMP officials attribute the increased number of reported cases to enhanced surveillance and monitoring efforts, some experts emphasize that winter conditions typically do not support mosquito breeding. Senior BBMP officials acknowledge the intensified monitoring, including visits to the surroundings of every house reporting a dengue case, leading to the identification of more cases.
In response to the surge in cases, BBMP has escalated surveillance and preventive measures. Continuous fogging, door-to-door inspections to identify mosquito breeding spots, and educational initiatives are among the measures being implemented. Special attention is given to houses with backyards and gardens, common breeding grounds for mosquitoes, with fines imposed on those neglecting proper maintenance.
Despite reporting 241 cases in the first ten days of December, officials expressed hope that the numbers will decrease as temperatures continue to drop.
