In a vibrant push toward citizen-driven urban transformation, the IISc Sustainable Transportation Lab (IST Lab) hosted the Reimagine Livable Bengaluru Design Jam on Saturday. Held on the IISc campus, the workshop set the tone for the upcoming World Symposium on Sustainable Transport and Livability, a biennial forum focused on reshaping mobility and city living.

The event drew participants from diverse backgrounds, who engaged in rethinking Bengaluru’s public spaces—examining streets, neighbourhoods, transit hubs, and sustainability practices. The group identified pressing urban challenges such as difficult commutes, poor pedestrian infrastructure, and inadequate waste systems, offering real-world solutions rooted in community needs.

Key ideas included:

  • Creating “Happy Roads” inspired by the success of Church Street, prioritizing walkability and aesthetics.
  • Redesigning and repositioning foot overbridges for improved accessibility.
  • Installing rainwater recharge systems at Majestic Station to curb flooding.
  • Upgrading solid waste management systems citywide.
  • Offering SEZ incentives for establishing staff transportation networks, reducing private vehicle reliance.

By empowering everyday citizens to co-create livable, greener cities, IST Lab reinforces the idea that urban change begins from the ground up—with those who experience the city firsthand.
