The Devanahalli toll plaza near Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) reported record-breaking revenue of ₹308 crore in FY 2023-24, as disclosed in a Rajya Sabha response on national highway toll collections. Over the past decade, the plaza has amassed ₹1,577 crore, making it the highest revenue-generating toll plaza in Karnataka. Its previous peak collection was ₹187 crore in FY 2018-19.

Strategically located on NH 44, the plaza benefits from heavy traffic as it serves as the main route to KIA, India’s third-busiest airport. In 2023-24, KIA handled 37.53 million passengers and 439,524 metric tonnes of cargo—a significant jump from 31.91 million passengers in FY 2023 and 16.29 million in FY 2022. The growth in passenger numbers has directly contributed to the toll plaza’s earnings.

NH 44’s importance extends beyond airport connectivity, serving as a crucial commercial corridor linking Karnataka to Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. This continuous movement of freight and passengers bolsters toll revenues.

Elsewhere, the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway, now upgraded to a six-lane expressway, has also seen rising toll collections. The Kaniminike and Sheshagirihalli toll plazas together generated ₹180 crore in FY 2023-24, compared to ₹12 crore in FY 2022-23. This highway’s improved infrastructure has reduced travel time between Bengaluru and Mysuru to just 90 minutes, attracting more vehicles and boosting toll revenues.

Karnataka’s robust toll collections highlight the state’s growing infrastructure usage, driven by enhanced connectivity and rising commuter demand.
