Bengaluru: After several Congress and JD(S) MLAs submitted their resignations to Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker Ramesh Kumar on Saturday, chaos took over the ruling Karnataka coalition government and steps were taken to get the situation under control.
While some reports state that 13 MLAs have resigned, the Speaker has stated that only 11 MLAs have submitted their resignations. Some other reports have stated that some more MLAs were set to resign on Saturday, but were hesitant to do so as it was not an auspicious day.
Reports have also come in that the dissident MLAs were flown in two separate flights to Mumbai. One plane carrying nine MLAs and the other carrying two. They have been lodged at the Renaissance hotel in Mumbai. This is the same hotel where, in January 2019, five Congress and JD(S) MLAs were lodged when the coalition government had accused the BJP of poaching its MLAs.
According to ANI, three of the Congress MLAs who resigned, Ramalinga Reddy, S T Somashekar and Munirathna stayed behind in Bengaluru city.
It can be recalled that on Saturday, H Vishwanath (JDS), Mahesh Kumthalli (Congress), BC Patil (Congress), Ramesh Jarkiholi (Congress), Shivaram Hebbar (Congress), Narayan Gowda (JDS), Gopalia (JDS), ST Somashekar (Congress), Muniratna (Congress), Pratap Gowda (Congress) and Byrathi Basavaraj (Congress) submitted their resignations to Speaker Ramesh Kumar.
