Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has confirmed that the permanent drinking water project for Bengaluru South district will be finished by December 2025. The project, valued at ₹540 crore, aims to provide a sustainable water supply to regions including Ramanagar, Kanakapura, Chennapatna, and Magadi taluks.

Launched during Shivakumar’s earlier tenure as Water Resources Minister, the project addresses long-standing water scarcity in the region. He conducted a groundbreaking ceremony near the Sattegala reservoir and emphasized that this was a poll-time promise made during the Chennapatna by-elections.

Designed to deliver 3.3 TMCft of water at a minimal cost, the initiative is set to benefit over 10.82 lakh residents and nearly 9.03 lakh livestock. The water will be routed by gravity flow from Sattegala reservoir to the Iggalur barrage, with 220 cusecs of water flowing continuously for 180 days annually.

Shivakumar expressed concern over implementation delays and questioned officials and the executing company, Megha Engineering, about the reasons. Despite the hurdles, significant progress has been made: 5.5 km of the 25.4 km pipeline and 11.33 km of the 12.05 km tunnel have already been completed.

The Deputy CM also reassured farmers that those who part with land for the project will receive fair compensation. The initiative is expected to boost groundwater levels and ensure a reliable water source in an area hit by irregular rainfall and water shortages in recent years.
