Bengaluru: Janata Dal (S) leader and former MLC M C Nanaiah on Friday demanded the state government not to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu despite Supreme Court order.

Speaking to media persons, M C Nanaiah said the water storage at the four reservoirs in Cauvery basin has been depleting day by day due to the failure of monsoon in the state, especially in Kodagu district. “There is an acute shortage for drinking water in Kodagu district. I want the state government not to obey the Supreme Court order in Cauvery water dispute,” Nanaiah said.

The JD(S) leader said that both the Houses of legislature have the power on par with the Supreme Court and the need of the hour is to assert the rights of legislature to protect the farmers’ interest in the state. “I want both the Houses to convey a strong message to the judiciary by passing a resolution against the Supreme Court order which is unimplementable,” he said.

He said the state government has already released 21 TMC of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu and the reservoirs would be emptied if the state government releases Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
