The newly opened carriageway of the double-decker flyover between Silk Board and Ragigudda Metro station in Bengaluru has been temporarily closed within days of its launch, following safety concerns flagged during a trial run.
Trial run reveals safety gaps
City traffic police said the 3.5-km stretch was opened only on a trial basis. During this period, multiple issues were identified, including inadequate signage and lack of safety measures for motorists.
Officials have now asked Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited to address these concerns before allowing regular traffic.
Key issues flagged
Authorities pointed out the need for clearer signboards, especially indicating the down ramp towards BTM Layout for vehicles coming from HSR Layout.
Additional measures suggested include installation of rumble strips, proper speed limit signage, and strict lane discipline enforcement along the elevated corridor.
Reopening expected soon
Sources indicate that the flyover could reopen for regular use from May 1 after necessary corrections.
Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar is expected to inspect the stretch before it is fully operational.
Relief for commuters, but confusion persists
The flyover, built at a cost of ₹530 crore, is aimed at easing congestion for motorists travelling between south Bengaluru and the Outer Ring Road.
While its initial opening brought relief, the sudden closure left many commuters confused. “If there are issues, they should fix them quickly and reopen it without delay,” said a motorist.
Focus on safety before full launch
Officials emphasised that ensuring commuter safety remains the priority before reopening the corridor.
The development highlights the importance of thorough testing and infrastructure readiness in major urban mobility projects.
