DPI to check the school bag weight in classrooms using electronic weighing machines

Bengaluru: The government is very clear about bringing a cap on the weight of the school bags. It has been a common scene over the last several years that even little kids had to take the burden of the school bags that weighed as much as their body weight.

Taking note of the same, this year the state government has clearly said that the weight of the school bag of the child should be only 10 per cent of the child’s body weight. To ensure that the rule is implemented without fail, the Department of Public Instruction has decided to carry out surprise inspections in the schools and check the weight of the bags of every child. This is the first of its kind experiment in the entire country.

According to SR Umashankar, principal secretary, DPI, for this purpose, the DPI will procure the electronic weighing machines. “Our officers will visit the schools without any prior intimation. They will check the bags randomly. The bag shall not exceed the 10% of the body weight of the children. All the schools must follow the school bag weight order without fail. This checking drive will be followed across the state,” he stated.

He also warned that if the school managements fail to bring down the school bag weight, the recognition of such schools will be withdrawn.
