A 52-year-old farm laborer, Subramani, lost his life when a drunk lorry driver crashed into his two-wheeler in Shettigere, northeastern Bengaluru, on Thursday. Enraged locals staged a roadside protest with the victim’s body, blaming police negligence for recurring accidents.
The tragedy unfolded at 5:15 PM on a median-less road frequently misused by taxis and private vehicles bypassing the KIA toll plaza. The concrete mixer lorry, driven on the extreme right, struck Subramani’s bike near a temple, killing him instantly before ramming into a cab and a tree. The 25-year-old driver from Raichur was found intoxicated and has been charged under BNS Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).
Locals, furious over the lack of traffic enforcement, alleged that toll-dodging vehicles regularly use this route, resulting in four fatalities this year. As tensions rose, police lathicharged to disperse the crowd before reaching a settlement.
This tragic accident highlights serious lapses in road safety and the urgent need for stricter enforcement to prevent further loss of life.
