Bengaluru: Durga Puja, a festival celebrated with great fervour and devotion, is undergoing a remarkable transformation in the city this year. As community engagement, social service, and cultural integration take centre stage, the celebrations are reflecting a broader social consciousness. Long-time puja organisers are stepping up their efforts to forge meaningful connections with local communities, addressing pressing social issues while keeping the traditional spirit alive.

Community-Centric Celebrations

This year, organisations like the RT Nagar Socio-Cultural Trust, Bengali in Bangalore (BinB), the Sanskritik Bengali Association, JP Nagar, and the Socio-Cultural Association, Indiranagar, are not just organising grand festivities; they are prioritising social responsibility. These groups are partnering with orphanages, old-age homes, and schools, pledging to sponsor meals and distribute ‘bhog prasad’ throughout the celebrations. This initiative showcases a profound commitment to uplifting underprivileged sections of society while fostering a sense of unity and inclusiveness.

Angshuman Roy, president of the Socio-Cultural Association, Indiranagar, highlights this shift: “We are focusing on deeper integration with the local Kannadiga community this year. Our programmes are designed to cater to a wide range of audiences, making the festival more inclusive.” This approach not only enriches the festival but also strengthens bonds between different cultural groups in the city.

Empowering Women

In a significant move towards gender equality, the RT Nagar Socio-Cultural Trust has placed a strong emphasis on women’s involvement in the organisation of the festival. Janardhan Mandal from the association noted, “This year, women are leading every aspect of the festival. We’ve ensured that more women are involved in key roles, from planning to execution.” This initiative is a positive step towards empowering women in community roles, reflecting a progressive shift in traditional norms.

Cultural Extravaganza

Despite the focus on social issues, the cultural essence of Durga Puja remains vibrant and alive. The celebrations are set to feature a multitude of events, including themed decorations that bring the pandals to life, performances of Rabindra Sangeet, Bollywood medleys, and traditional folk dances. Each pandal will showcase elaborate decorations, designed to capture the spirit and narrative of the festival.

The culinary experience promises to be diverse as well, with multi-cuisine food courts catering to a variety of tastes. In addition to food stalls, flea markets will be set up, providing visitors with an array of handicrafts and local products. The event will also incorporate dance floors for ‘dandiya’ and ‘garba,’ allowing attendees to engage in these popular festive dances, thus creating a lively atmosphere that resonates with the spirit of celebration.

A Surge in Demand for Idols

With the excitement building up, idol makers are witnessing a surge in demand. “Every year, artists from Kolkata come to Bengaluru to craft Durga idols for the city’s Bengali associations,” shared Muni Marappa, an idol maker from JC Nagar. At Basudev Pal’s workshop on Chunchaghatta Main Road, the atmosphere is bustling with activity as artisans create Durga idols of various sizes and designs. The craftsmanship reflects the devotion and artistry that goes into each idol, adding a layer of reverence to the celebrations.

A Festival of Togetherness

As Durga Puja approaches, the emphasis on community, cultural integration, and social responsibility signals a refreshing shift in how the festival is celebrated. This year, the celebrations are not just about rituals and traditions but also about fostering connections and upliftment. The collaborations between various organisations and the active participation of the local community are set to create a festive atmosphere that resonates with inclusivity and joy.

In essence, this year’s Durga Puja celebrations in the city are a testament to the power of community spirit, showcasing that while traditions hold great importance, the heart of the festival beats strongest when it brings people together for a common cause.
