Bengaluru: The Election Commission of India, on Monday, January 27, announced a by-election for one seat in the Karnataka Legislative Council by the members of the Legislative Assembly. The polling date has been set on February 17 between 9 AM and 4 PM. The counting will be held on the same day at 5 PM.
In a press note, the EC said, “There is one casual vacancy in the Karnataka Legislative Council by the members of the Legislative Assembly.”
The seat, according to the EC was left vacant by Rizwan Arshad of the Indian National Congress, as he was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly on December 9, 2019. The term of the post, according to the press statement is June 14, 2022.
The statement reads that the Commission has decided to hold a bye-election to the Karnataka Legislative Council by the members of the Legislative Assembly to fill the vacancy.
Notifications will be issued starting January 30 and the last date to file nominations is on February 6. The nominations will be scrutinised on February 7 and the last date for candidates to withdraw their nominations is February 10.
