Bengaluru: The editors of two Kannada tabloids on Wednesday moved the High Court questioning the legality of the Legislative Assembly’s November 21st decision of reiterating its resolution of June 21, 2017 sentencing one-year imprisonment and Rs 10,000 fine based on the recommendation of a Committee on Privileges for publishing false and defamatory news against three legislators.
Ravi Belagare, editor of Hi Bangalore and Anil Raj, editor of Yelahanka Voice said that recommendations of Committee on Privileges and the Assembly’s resolution were unconstitutional. They said the legislature had no power or jurisdiction to pass a resolution to convict and impose imprisonment.
The Committee on Privileges had made its recommendation based on the complaints given by MLAs K.B. Koliwad and S.R. Vishwanath.
The Assembly on November 21 took up the plea of the petitioners to review its June 21 resolution based on the outcome of the proceedings before the High Court on July 1, 2017 during an earlier petition filed by them against their conviction and sentence.
