Bengaluru: A heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded in Kodigehalli, Bengaluru, when 70-year-old Seethappa, a retired farmer, was fatally attacked by a pack of stray dogs in the early hours of July 27. The gruesome incident has reignited nationwide concerns over the growing menace of stray dog attacks.
According to reports, Seethappa had stepped out around 3:30 AM wrapped in a black blanket, as part of his regular morning routine, when a group of at least eight dogs pounced on him. Neighbours, awakened by his agonising cries, witnessed the horrifying scene as the animals tore into his flesh, causing deep injuries to his hands, legs, and face.
Despite being rushed to KIMS Hospital, doctors declared him dead upon arrival. His son, Venkatesh Seethappa (43), expressed disbelief and grief, stating his father was fit, had mild asthma, and followed a disciplined daily schedule. “He was healthy… we never imagined something so brutal could happen right outside our home,” he told the Times of India.
Eyewitnesses tried to scare the dogs off by throwing water and banging gates, but the animals remained aggressive. The incident highlights the increasing threat posed by stray dogs, especially to vulnerable populations like children and the elderly.
This comes shortly after similar shocking cases—a 6-year-old girl in Delhi died of rabies, and a toddler was mauled in Hubballi.
The Supreme Court has already taken suo motu cognisance, noting the rising number of dog attacks across India. While current ABC Rules, 2023, mandate sterilisation and prohibit relocation, experts and citizens are now demanding urgent policy reviews and stricter control measures.
