Bengaluru: The IT-BT capital of India, has added another feather to its crown by becoming the city with the most electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the country. According to a report by the Union Energy Ministry’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Bengaluru has surpassed other cities with a total of 4,462 EV charging stations.
Karnataka’s EV Policy Boosts Adoption
Karnataka’s proactive approach to electric vehicles, with the introduction of the EV Policy in 2017 and its revision in 2021, has contributed to the surge in EV adoption. Food delivery services, couriers, and individuals are increasingly switching to electric vehicles.
Widespread Charging Infrastructure
BESCOM, the state’s power distribution company, has set up charging stations in its offices, government buildings, and private companies. Apartment complexes have also started individual charging stations. Residents like Raghu and Pradeep Sagar have praised the convenience and accessibility of charging facilities.
Innovative Initiatives
BESCOM is building a solar-based EV charging hub near Devanahalli International Airport, capable of charging 23 vehicles simultaneously.
The hub will feature fast charging points, battery recycling, and 24-hour EV charging facilities.
Private companies have launched EV charging stations, such as the “Joule” project.
Future Plans
BESCOM, the nodal agency for EV infrastructure, has outlined plans to:
- Set up EV charging centers in Indira Canteens, BBMP, BDA, auto stands, and educational institutions.
- Install Battery Swapping Stations for two-wheelers.
- Establish EV charging stations in RTO offices and state highways.
- Expand charging infrastructure on national highways.
