Bengaluru: Several volunteers on Monday scientifically mapped around 82 trees belonging to 12 different species along the boundary of the Cubbon Park, which are to be cut owing to elevated corridor.

The proposed elevated corridor passing through the Cubbon Park poses a threat to green cover along the stretch.

A group of volunteers from different parts of the city took to mapping of trees on Monday morning.

The volunteers equipped with measuring tapes started measuring trees on either side of the road staring from Mahatma Gandhi Statue Circle and progressed towards Minsk Square.

The volunteers measured the girth using tapes and noted the approximate height along with noting their species and age. The volunteers measured around 82 trees belonging to 12 species.

Mapping trees towards the far end of the stretch near Mahatma Gandhi statue was yet to be completed.

The uniqueness of this stretch of road is that a lot of them are fruit bearing unlike trees on other roads, which are mostly flower bearing or valued for timber. The trees here are mostly jamun, mango and tamrind. Some of the mango and tamrind trees are more than 100 years old. Many birds also inhabit these trees, which may lose their habitat if the project materializes.

The green canopy in the heart of the city is appreciated by many. This stretch of road can be clearly seen from the commentary box of the Chinnaswamy stadium and several international cricketers have commented on this lush green canopy. The elevated corridor project is now all set to destroy this rare, endless canopy.
