Bengaluru police have apprehended eight individuals, including an employee of the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), for their alleged involvement in a fraudulent scheme to block engineering seats.
The scam came to light on November 13 after KEA officials filed a complaint at Malleswaram police station regarding irregularities in admissions to undergraduate engineering courses for 2024-2025. Based on the report, authorities initiated a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, adding provisions from the IT Act.
A senior police officer revealed that three private engineering colleges were investigated, leading to the collection of significant evidence. Among those arrested are a KEA staff member, middlemen, and college employees. They were presented in court and placed under 10-day police custody for further interrogation.
The scam involved candidates allegedly making option entries for colleges without genuine intent to enroll, effectively blocking seats for other applicants. Officials are now delving deeper into the extent of the operation.
In another notable case, Bengaluru police dismantled the “Bedsheet Gang,” a criminal group hailing from Bihar’s East Champaran district. Known for executing sophisticated thefts, they were caught after stealing goods worth millions. Investigators used CCTV footage to track the gang, bringing their reign of terror to an end.
Authorities continue efforts to uncover fraudulent schemes and criminal activities affecting the city.
